Kitchen Refinishing in Canton, Cardiff From Dated Beech to Farrow & Ball Pigeon

Many of the kitchens we see across Canton and wider Cardiff follow a similar pattern — solid, well-built cabinetry, but finished in dated oak tones that no longer suit the space.
This project was no different.
Rather than replacing the kitchen entirely, the brief was simple: lighten the space, modernise the feel, and retain what was already there.
The Existing Kitchen
The original kitchen featured:
Beech shaker-style cabinetry
Laminate worktops
Standard chrome hardware
Neutral tiled splashback

Structurally, everything was sound. The layout worked. The issue was purely visual weight and tone.
This is where refinishing becomes a considered alternative to replacement.
The Approach: Workshop-Led Kitchen Refinishing
All removable elements — doors, drawers, and panels — were taken to our workshop for refinishing.
This allows for:
Controlled spray conditions
Consistent coverage across profiles and edges
A more durable, even finish than on-site spraying alone
Fixed elements were carefully prepared and refinished on-site to ensure continuity throughout.
The Colour Choice: Farrow & Ball Pigeon
The client chose Farrow & Ball Pigeon — a muted green-grey that sits comfortably in lower-light spaces.
It works particularly well here because:
It softens the visual weight of the cabinetry
It pairs naturally with the existing worktops and flooring
It avoids the starkness of brighter whites
The result is a kitchen that feels calmer and more cohesive, without pushing too far into trend-led territory. Hardware Consideration: Small Changes, Big Impact

The existing handles were retained, but this is often where a project can be pushed further.
For kitchens like this, we typically recommend:
Aged brass or bronze knobs for warmth
Longer bar handles for a more contemporary feel
Or a move to minimal black hardware for contrast
Hardware sits at eye level and hand level — it quietly defines how “finished” a kitchen feels.
The Result

The transformation is not about dramatic redesign — it’s about refinement.
The cabinetry now sits more comfortably within the space
The room feels lighter, despite a deeper colour
The overall finish is consistent, durable, and considered
Most importantly, the kitchen has been preserved rather than replaced.
