A New 1909 Kitchen, Finished Beyond the Standard Palette
Commissioned before installation, this new 1909 kitchen offered the opportunity to develop a more individual finish beyond the manufacturer's standard colour options.
Through colour consultation and specialist workshop spray finishing, the cabinetry was finished in Paint & Paper Library Temple, with a contrasting Deep Reddish Brown island. The resulting palette brings warmth and architectural depth to the contemporary design, complemented by antique brass details and pale surrounding materials.
The original concept
The initial kitchen visuals established the layout: a generous central island, a full-height bank of cabinetry and a long run of base units beneath the worktop.
Although the design of the kitchen was resolved, the original blue finish did not create the atmosphere the clients wanted for the completed room. Our consultation allowed us to explore the cabinetry alongside the proposed worktops, flooring, lighting and hardware before settling on the final palette.
Developing the colour palette
The clients selected Paint & Paper Library’s Temple for the base cabinetry and tall units. Its softer, warmer character sits quietly alongside the pale surfaces and allows the brass hardware to stand out without dominating the room.
For the island, Farrow & Ball’s Deep Reddish Brown introduced greater depth and contrast. Used across the large central volume, it anchors the kitchen and gives the island a stronger architectural presence.
Together, the two colours feel warm and distinctive while remaining balanced within the light-filled space.
Finished before installation
The cabinetry was prepared and professionally spray finished before being delivered and installed.
Working at this stage allowed every element to be considered as part of one complete finish, giving the clients a kitchen specified in their chosen colours from the outset—beyond the manufacturer’s standard options.
The completed kitchen
The finished space feels noticeably warmer than the original concept while retaining the kitchen’s clean, contemporary lines.
Temple provides a calm foundation across the perimeter cabinetry and tall bank, while Deep Reddish Brown gives the island its own identity. Pale worktops, warm metalwork and simple linen lighting complete the room without competing with the cabinetry.
A considered colour scheme, professionally applied before installation, made this new kitchen feel entirely personal to the home.
