Handmade oak kitchen refinished in School House White in Cyncoed Cardiff

A Handmade Oak Kitchen, Restored for the Next Generation - Cyncoed, Cardiff

Set within a historic home in Cyncoed, Cardiff, this bespoke handmade oak kitchen had been at the heart of the house for over 20 years. Built from solid timber using traditional joinery methods, the craftsmanship was exceptional. Rather than replace it, the homeowners chose careful restoration — preserving the character, integrity, and history of a kitchen made to last.

Project Scope

Over time, natural movement in the timber had caused a number of joints to weaken, leading to subtle movement in several doors. During our preparation process — after initial cleaning, sanding, and priming — we identified this structural issue and carried out a full assessment of the kitchen’s joinery.

Each door and joint was stress-tested, with weakened areas carefully relieved, realigned, and bonded using high-strength polyurethane wood adhesive. Components were then clamped, left to cure fully, and sanded back to ensure strength, accuracy, and longevity. This furniture-grade restoration work ensures the kitchen is structurally sound and ready to last for decades to come.

Once repairs were complete, every surface was meticulously hand-sanded to create the perfect foundation for refinishing while preserving the original profiles and detailing of the cabinetry.

A specialist adhesion primer system was applied, followed by multiple fine coats of Farrow & Ball School House White — a soft, timeless shade that complements the home’s traditional architecture while gently brightening the space.

The final finish is smooth, durable, and sympathetic to the handcrafted nature of the kitchen — not heavy or over-coated, but refined and built for everyday life.

By restoring the original joinery and refinishing the cabinetry with care, this kitchen is now ready to serve the home beautifully for the next 20 years and beyond.
